About

Domenichino was accused of plagiarizing an older painting by his teacher Agostino Carracci — the case became one of the first plagiarism scandals in art history. Whatever its origins, it's an emotionally exacting picture: Jerome is emaciated, kneeling naked-shouldered before the altar, receiving his final communion. The lion (his desert companion) sleeps at his feet. Poussin considered this one of the greatest paintings in Rome.
