- Illusionistic ceilings and tender sensuality
Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio, worked far from Rome and Florence yet quietly rewrote the rules of the ceiling. His domes in Parma opened into infinite skies of tumbling figures, a century before the Baroque made the trick famous. His mythologies — Jupiter as cloud, as swan, as shower of gold — are among the most tender erotic paintings of the Renaissance.
