Tiziano Vecellio led Venetian painting for six decades. Where Florentines drew, he painted — building form out of glazed colour, loose brushwork and warm light. He portrayed emperors, popes and courtesans with the same charged sensuality, and in old age worked with his fingers as much as his brush, anticipating the freedom of modern painting by three centuries.
