Bernini was the architect of Baroque Rome. Sculptor, architect, painter and playwright, he shaped the city under eight popes — the colonnade of St. Peter's Square, the Baldacchino over the altar, the Four Rivers fountain in Piazza Navona. In marble he did the impossible: Daphne's fingers becoming leaves, Persephone's thigh yielding to Pluto's grip, Teresa's ecstasy caught mid-swoon. Nothing in his hands ever stayed still.
